Some small activity

OK, I am arrived and in the apartment have had limited time on the air. Mid to late mornings for the past five days. In that time I have had 17 QSOs on 20 and 30 meters. All Euro and several into the UK from here in St. Raphael. Two QSOs were 2x QRP. No DX, not even Scandinavia. Amazed to have had any at all though. Rig is the FT-817 at 3/4 watts. Antenna about 30-feet of wire dropped down from window-to balcony-then straight down from this 1st floor apartment. The MFJ tuner manages to tune it though not efficiently.

Weather very poor, rainy, windy, this morning electrical storms. Icy conditions when we arrived here. Clear now with rain washing snow/ice away.

Haven't done much since arrival as the weather not conducive to walking/visiting. Tomorrow, a sunny day expected.

Try to catch up with your blogs now.

Worked AV5XR in India  very late this afternoon on 30 meters cw. Amazed as the antenna is still about 30-feet  of wire, some of it on the ground.

  1. Hi Dick, propagation is ver low, I think, or I do have a problem with the freezing weather. Yesterday for instance, I called on several bands CQ with CW but only on 17m I was reported by a US ham (RBN) sometimes I think my antenna isn't working. But the SWR is Okay. 73 Paul

I have not been on the radio for the last couple of nights but may get on this evening....hope the conditions have improved somewhat....if not then as you said it's time to catch up on the blogs.

  3. Thanks for commenting, Paul and Mike. I continue to operate a bit each morning. Only 30M now as that band seems best for me despite short wire antenna. Always Europe and UK contacts. Maybe hear you on 30M one day, Paul.

Difficult to connect to internet from here.

  4. Hello Dick,

Glad you're back on the air. I've worked a guy several times who lives on the 8th floor of an apartment building in downtown NYC. He uses a long random wire dropped out his window. It's a great idea and gets you on the air. FB
